Emulating a Wide Area Network for Testing Dependable Distributed Systems

چکیده
Wide Area Networks have different performance characteristics compared with Local Area Networks. Their throughput is usually lower and there is a greater chance of information being dropped, damaged or delayed. Furthermore software that is developed for dependable applications over wide area networks may frequently be tested in a LAN environment where it is difficult to reproduce the characteristics of a WAN. In this paper we consider the problem of emulating a wide area network using Corba to implement clients and servers. Any dependable system implemented using Corba over a LAN can then be realistically tested in a WAN context. We propose two models: Non Interceptor Redirection Model (NIRM) and Interceptor Redirection Model (IRM). Figures 1 and 2 show the architecture of these two models. Figure 1. Programming distributed applications is already potentially difficult, although tools exist to aid in their creation. Applications developed to communicate over local area networks can expect to enjoy highly reliable communications with minimal latency. However, such applications may no longer continue to perform as expected if moved to a wide-area network environment, due to the reduced perfor...

Various information systems are widely used in the information society era, and the demand for highly dependable system is increasing year after year. However, software testing for such a system becomes more difficult due to the enlargement and the complexity of the system. In particular, it is often difficult to test parallel and distributed systems in the real world after deployment, although...
